What exactly is Twitter Mutuality? Glad you asked, Twitter mutuality is simply when you follow someone on Twitter and the follow you back. So for example if you have 1000 followers, and 750 of them are following you back, then your Twitter mutuality percentage is 75%.

I feel it’s important to support Twitter mutuality. Following those that follow you shows you are willing to be social with them, and listen to what they have to say. There are several tools out there that help you track your mutuality on Twitter, and also help you unfollow anyone that isn’t following you back.

My personal favorite Twitter mutuality tool is Huitter. Along with Huitter, you have Tweepular, Friend or Follow, Your Twitter Karma, Untweeps, Flash Tweet & Buzzom. I am going to give you a short tutorial on using Huitter.com. If you want I can also provide tutorials for the other tools, but like I said, Huitter is my favorite, and gets the job done very fast and efficiently.

When you arrive at Huitter.com, you are going to want to click the “Mutuality” link:

Once you have clicked the Mutuality link, you will be taken to a page where you are given an option to perform your mutuality manually or automatically. Click on the manual button.

Next you will be asked to login using your Twitter credentials. Go ahead and enter them now. It’s safe I do this once every 3 days, to keep my follow to unfollow ratio low, and my Twitter mutuality high. Now you are taken to a screen where you have a few options before you continue, and bulk unfollow anyone not following you back. Before you proceed, you need to make a decision. Are there any Twitter users that you wish to continue to follow even though they are not following you back? These may be some gurus in your niche or someone with some authority in your niche. This isn’t as important now that Twitter has the Twitter List feature. Read How to Create a Twitter List, for more information about using the list feature with Twitter.

Check the first bubble that says “Unfollow all who do not follow you back”, and click the “Go” button. Thats it, your done. Let Huitter work it’s magic. The time it takes depends on your Twitter mutuality ratio. The more people that aren’t following you back the longer it will take. A good schedule to follow if you are over 10,000 followers, and adding 1,000 new followers everyday is to unfollow every 3 days. Be sure not to bulk follow people on the days you use Huitter, or any other Twitter mutuality tool.
